County Passes Motion to Divert River
by Kate Everson
Hastings Cty. – County council has passed a motion to solicit the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans and the federal government to divert the Moira River around the contaminated Deloro mine site.
A letter was directed to MP Larry McCormick (Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington) on October 12 to take measures to redirect the river west and south of Deloro to eliminate contaminated infiltration and protect the fisheries of the Moira River and the Bay of Quinte. The motion was made by Tom Deline and seconded by Dave Panabaker at the September 30 county council meeting.
Copies of the letter were forwarded to Brian Ward, Ministry of the Environment, Belleville Mayor Ross McDougall, Quinte West Mayor Jack Arthur, MPP Leona Dombrowsky and the municipality of Centre Hastings.
