Big court ruling

An Ottawa judge has found Ontario’s Environment Ministry not guilty on eight charges that it failed to do enough to clean-up pollution in the town north of Belleville.

The verdict is a major setback for a local environmental group that laid the charges in 1997.

Spokesperson Janet Fletcher says while she’s disappointed with the ruling, her group intends to monitor the clean-up in Deloro.

Justice Celynne Dorval says she’s satisfied the ministry is working on a plan to clean-up one of Ontario’s most polluted areas.

A government lawyer says the province is doing its best.

Fletcher’s group the Environmental Bureau of Investigation has already launched another charge against the province.

This one alleges radioactive contamination has migrated from an old gold mine in the town.

That case will be heard in August.
